چکیده

Traditional computational models of geographic phenomena offer no room for imperfection. Underlying this tradition is the simplifying assumption that reality is certain, crisp, unambiguous, independent of context, and capable of quantitative representation. The paper will report on work, undertaken as part of a joint project between the universities of Keele and Leeds, which explicitly recognises that most geographic information is intrinsically imperfect. Based on an ontology of imperfection it is argued that the interpretation of imperfect geographic information is facilitated by reference to formal models of imperfection, in particular multi-valued logics. The development of Java software able to assist with a geodemographic retail site assessment application is used to illustrate the utility of a formal ontological approach.

A FORMAL APPROACH TO IMPERFECTION IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION Full paper

Ontological Investigation of Ecosystem Hierarchies and Formal Theory for Multiscale Ecosystem Classifications

This paper presents a formalized ontological framework for the analysis of multiscale classifications of geographic objects. We propose a set of logical principles that guide such geographic classifications. Then we demonstrate application of these principles on a practical example of the “National Hierarchical Framework of Ecological Units”. The framework has a potential to be used to facilita...

Hammerstein-Wiener Model: A New Approach to the Estimation of Formal Neural Information

A new approach is introduced to estimate the formal information of neurons. Formal Information, mainly discusses about the aspects of the response that is related to the stimulus. Estimation is based on introducing a mathematical nonlinear model with Hammerstein-Wiener system estimator. This method of system identification consists of three blocks to completely describe the nonlinearity of inp...

Using Conceptual and Ontological Models for Tracking Changes of Spatio-Temporal Objects and Concepts over Time

In this paper, we present a new approach that benefits from the advantages of both conceptual and ontological models in order to provide a powerful spatio-temporal data model for geographic information systems (GIS). We base our model on the MADS conceptual model that is transformed to a corresponding ontology model, using database to ontology mapping techniques and a set of transformation rule...

Developing Reliable yet Flexible Software through If-Then Model Transformation Rules

Developing reliable yet flexible software is a hard problem. Although modeling methods enjoy a lot of advantages, the exclusive use of just one of them, in many cases, may not guarantee the development of reliable and flexible software. Formal modeling methods ensure reliability because they use a rigorous approach to software development. However, lack of knowledge and high cost practically fo...
